St Mary's, an 850 year-old church is hidden in a farmyard located on marshland to the South of the River Swale. This unique location makes this Church a true hidden gem.
In the mid 12th century, the west doorway with zig-zag decoration was built, whilst the incredibly long chancel was built around a hundred years later. Inside, a 13th century stone coffin is surfaced by carved hands holding a heart.
There is a curious brick tower that is believed to be early 19th century aswell as some reused Roman tiles in the wall.
Please note that access to this church is only permitted from the public road that leads to the church from the North East. Visitors are politely asked not to use the private road that reaches the church from the South.
